The Ravens poster doesn’t just promote the film—it embodies it. Striking, unsettling, and deeply symbolic.”

Ravens – the new film from The Chase Films’s Mark Gill

Oscar and BAFTA-nominated writer-director Mark Gill brings the haunting world of the renowned Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase to the screen in Ravens – a film as poetic and uncompromising as Fukase’s art.

Fukase’s life and tumultuous relationship with his wife, Yoko, inspired the film. Known for his striking, emotionally resonant imagery, Fukase’s relationship with Yoko is depicted with raw authenticity.

The film explores their shared dreams and the impact of personal tragedy on their lives and art. Ravens is a profound, heartrending and fantastical journey through love, loss and the creative struggle.

“Fukase’s photographs make it clear that he was a creative genius and as soon as I saw them I knew I needed to discover the man behind the camera,” says Mark. “His story is intertwined with that of Yoko, his wife, collaborator and survivor, and this film is her story too. She was more active than passive and so much more than a muse.”

Making Ravens in the heat of the Tokyo summer was a magical experience and I am incredibly proud of what we created together.”

“As a Japanophile Brit, my challenge when it came to creating this film included being able to authentically recreate these lives and the postwar Shōwa art scene they inhabited. Making Ravens in the heat of the Tokyo summer was a magical experience and I am incredibly proud of what we created together.”

Filmed in Tokyo in 2023, Ravens stars Tadanobu Asano, who was recently nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his role in Shōgun, alongside Kumi Takiuchi, Sôsuke Ikematsu and Kanji Furutachi.

As post-production partners, The Chase handled the offline edit and supported the European post workflow. We are also shaping the global marketing campaign alongside producers and sales agents K5, from key art to social content, ensuring the film’s visual storytelling is as impactful off-screen as it is on it.

Ravens premiered at Tokyo International Film Festival and Austin Film Festival, with more festival announcements to come.
