Framing Ravens – Mark Gill’s eye for atmosphere
As both a filmmaker and photographer, Mark Gill approaches storytelling with a deeply visual sensibility. While directing Ravens, he documented the process through his own lens, capturing the atmosphere and emotion behind the scenes in a series of striking photographs.
“I was always taking pictures during filming,” Gill explains. “It helped me stay connected to Fukase’s perspective.” A recurring presence on set was the raven, Fukase’s signature motif. “Every morning, a raven landed on my Tokyo balcony,” Gill recalls. “It was uncanny—like the film was coming to life around me.”
His photographs aren’t just behind-the-scenes snapshots; they extend the film’s visual language—subtle, fragmented, and evocative, much like Fukase’s own work.
