Box House
Hayama

Located on a wooded hillside in the suburbs of Tokyo, the house is for a young family who wanted a ‘flexible box’ which could adapt to their growing and changing needs. Using the nature of the hilly site, the internal spaces are divided by changes in level.

The strong verticals of the industrial profiled alu/zinc walling gives a highly contemporary, low maintenance simple box, blending in with the shadows of the trees. The relative coarseness of the industrial cladding is contrasted with, artistic, bespoke, crafted glass panels. The subtle broken glass shapes are inserted in the cavity of double glazed windows facing the street. The light cast, is scattered on to the walls and floor while providing privacy from outside.
